Overview
TalentFish is casting a line for a Senior Power BI Reporting Consultant. This is a contract role in Chicago, IL with occasional onsite required.
The Senior Power BI Reporting Consultant will assist our client in expanding and elevating its use of Power BI, moving from static reporting toward dynamic, automated, and self-service reporting built on a Microsoft Fabric lakehouse. This consultant will develop accurate, executive-ready reporting, identify opportunities for reporting automation, and provide hands-on training, coaching, and mentoring to Finance and business users to drive Power BI adoption and long-term reporting self-sufficiency.
The ideal consultant is both a technical Power BI expert and an educator—someone who enjoys helping users learn new tools, gain confidence with data, and develop the skills to build, manage, and maintain Power BI reporting independently.
What You Bring to the Role / Experience and Qualifications
- 5+ years building reports and dashboards in Power BI Desktop and Power BI Service.
- Hands-on experience with Microsoft Fabric, including connecting to semantic models and lakehouse data and working within a medallion architecture.
- Demonstrated success driving Power BI adoption and reporting transformation, including transitioning users from static or periodic reporting toward automated, dynamic, and self-service reporting through effective change management, training, coaching, and user enablement.
- Proven success training end users, including train-the-trainer programs for power users who will build reports independently.
- A patient, approachable teaching style that makes people comfortable asking questions.
- Strong ability to translate business reporting needs into clear requirements for data engineering teams.
- Experience creating clear training materials, guides, and documentation.
- Workday, ERP, or financial data experience is a plus but not required.
- Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate (PL-300) or Fabric Analytics Engineer Associate (DP-600) is a plus.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
What You'll Do
- Learn the existing Microsoft Fabric environment and data models alongside the Data Architect and engineering team.
- Partner with Finance, Accounting, and business stakeholders to understand reporting needs, identify high-value use cases, and translate business requirements into effective Power BI solutions.
- Build and enhance Power BI reports and dashboards across financial, planning, grants, operational, and executive reporting needs.
- Help determine the appropriate reporting approach for different business needs and audiences, including operational, analytical, management, and executive-level reporting.
- Provide hands-on Power BI training, coaching, and mentoring to Finance and business users with varying levels of technical knowledge and Power BI experience.
- Train users to confidently navigate, analyze, build, modify, and maintain Power BI reports based on their role, responsibilities, and level of technical expertise.
- Develop designated power users who can independently build and manage reports while providing broader end-user training on effectively using Power BI for day-to-day reporting and analysis.
- Adapt training and communication to different learning styles and technical skill levels, demonstrating patience and the ability to explain technical concepts in clear, practical, nontechnical terms.
- Guide users through the transition from static and periodic reporting toward more dynamic, automated, repeatable, and self-service Power BI capabilities.
- Support change management and user adoption, helping users become comfortable and confident with new reporting tools, processes, and ways of working.
- Identify when new data models, relationships, or structures are needed to support reporting requirements and clearly communicate those needs to the technical team.
- Document report processes, data definitions, training materials, and best practices to support ongoing adoption and user self-sufficiency.
- Provide ongoing coaching and knowledge transfer throughout the engagement, building internal Power BI capabilities and long-term reporting self-sufficiency.
