Summary:
Under the direction of Payroll and Finance leadership, the Senior Payroll Specialist is responsible for the accurate and timely processing of payroll for a large and dynamic workforce. This role ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations while maintaining payroll records, supporting audits, and responding to employee inquiries.
The position requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, discretion, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, event-driven environment. Experience working in unionized environments and interpreting collective bargaining agreements is highly preferred.
The salary range for this position is $28.72 - $38.97 per hour. The rate of pay offered will be dependent upon the candidate’s relevant skills and experience.
Essential Functions
- Process payroll for employees in an accurate and timely manner with an employee base of 17K employing approximately 3-4 thousand employees annually with a peak of 2K in a month.
- Review and verify employee timecards, earnings, deductions, and payroll adjustments.
- Maintain payroll records in compliance with company policies and applicable regulations.
- Manage payroll-related changes, including new hires, terminations, pay rate updates, and benefit deductions.
- Respond to employee payroll inquiries and resolve discrepancies in a timely manner.
- Prepare payroll reports for accounting, finance, and leadership teams.
- Coordinate with Human Resources and Finance to ensure accurate employee data and benefits integration.
- Assist with year-end payroll processes, including W-2 preparation and audits.
- Support payroll audits and compliance reviews.
- Maintain strict confidentiality of payroll and employee information.
- Provide flexibility to support payroll operations during peak event periods, which may require non-standard work hours with advance notice.
- Perform additional duties as assigned in support of departmental and organizational goals.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field, or equivalent experience preferred.
- 3–5+ years of payroll processing experience.
- Experience working in a unionized environment strongly preferred.
- Working knowledge of payroll laws, tax regulations, and compliance requirements.
- Experience with payroll systems such as UKG Pro, ADP, Paychex, Workday, or similar platforms.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and payroll reporting tools.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- High level of accuracy, attention to detail, and confidentiality.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion and maintain high customer service standards.
